HEPA 13 vs HEPA 14: what's the difference and which filter do you need?

When buying an air purifier, you inevitably encounter the question: HEPA 13 or HEPA 14? Both are high-quality filters, but there is an important difference. In this article, we explain it clearly so you can make an informed choice.

What is a HEPA filter?

HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. A HEPA filter is a mechanical filter that forces air through a fine mesh of fiberglass. Particles smaller than the filter medium are captured in three ways: by impaction, interception, and diffusion. The classification (H13, H14) indicates the effectiveness of the filter.

The difference between HEPA 13 and HEPA 14

The classification is laid down in the European standard EN 1822:

  • HEPA 13 — captures at least 99.95% of all particles 0.3 microns in size
  • HEPA 14 — captures at least 99.995% of all particles — 10 times more effective at the critical particle size

For home use, this difference is negligibly small. In a 25 m² room, HEPA 13 misses one particle out of 2,000. HEPA 14 misses one out of 20,000.

When do you choose HEPA 13?

For the vast majority of home users, HEPA 13 is more than sufficient. It effectively filters pollen (100%), dust mite feces (100%), mold spores (100%), bacteria (almost 100%), and fine dust PM2.5 (99.95%+).

The BLANC SQUARE Air Purifier Pro and the Air Purifier Pro XL both use a certified HEPA 13 filter — ideal for allergies, hay fever, and general air purification at home.

When do you choose HEPA 14?

HEPA 14 is useful in specific situations: operating rooms, pharmaceutical production facilities, laboratories, and cleanrooms. For normal home use, it offers no noticeable advantage — and costs significantly more.

Other filter variants

  • Activated carbon filter — absorbs odors, gases, and volatile organic compounds
  • Pre-filter — captures large particles and extends the lifespan of the HEPA filter
  • UV-C lamp — destroys bacteria and viruses through ultraviolet light (present in the BLANC SQUARE Pro XL)

How long does a HEPA 13 filter last?

With normal use (8 hours a day), a HEPA 13 filter lasts an average of 6 to 8 months. The air purifier automatically signals when replacement is needed. Replacement filters for the Air Purifier Pro cost €26.95.

Conclusion

For home use, HEPA 13 is the right and most cost-effective choice. Preferably choose a model with a combination filter (HEPA 13 + activated carbon + pre-filter) for the most complete air purification.
