Whether you’re just starting in photography or have been shooting for years — a good tripod is essential. Sharp photos in low light conditions, long exposure shots, group photos where you are also in the picture: none of this is possible without a stable tripod. In this article, we explain everything you need to know.

When do you need a tripod for photography?

A tripod is essential for:

  • Long shutter speeds — anything below 1/60th of a second causes motion blur with a handheld camera. For 1/30, 1/15, or long exposures of seconds or minutes, a tripod is mandatory.
  • Night photography — stars, city lights, fireworks. Shutter speeds of 5 to 30 seconds or longer require absolute stability.
  • Self-portraits and group photos — use the self-timer or a remote control.
  • Macro photography — small movements are visible with extreme macro magnifications.
  • Video — shaky handheld video footage never looks professional.

What should you look for in a tripod for photography?

  • Load capacity — your tripod should be able to support at least 1.5x the weight of your heaviest camera + lens. A DSLR with a 70-200mm lens can weigh up to 2 kg.
  • Height — the tripod should extend to eye level without using the center column. The center column significantly reduces stability.
  • Material — aluminum is affordable and solid; carbon fiber is lighter but more expensive. For beginners, aluminum is more than sufficient.
  • Ball head or pan-tilt head — a ball head is more versatile and faster to use.
  • Quick-release system — for quick switching between tripod and handheld shooting.

The BLANC SQUARE Camera Tripod Pro for DSLR

The BLANC SQUARE Camera Tripod Pro is compatible with all DSLR and mirrorless cameras via the standard 1/4 inch screw mount. With a maximum height of 172 cm and a load capacity of 3 kg, it is suitable for most cameras and lenses.

The quick-release system allows switching between tripod and handheld in seconds. The included Bluetooth remote control prevents camera shake when pressing the shutter button — essential for sharp photos at longer shutter speeds.

Tips for sharper photos with a tripod

  • Use a self-timer or remote — even pressing the shutter button causes vibration. Use the 2-second self-timer or the Bluetooth remote.
  • Lock up the mirror — for DSLRs: use mirror lockup for shutter speeds between 1/2 and 1/30 second. The mirror causes vibrations in this range.
  • Extend the tripod as little as possible — the more extended, the less stable. Use the thicker bottom segments as much as possible.
  • Do not use the center column — the center column makes the tripod unstable. It's better to shoot with the tripod at a slightly lower height.
  • Hang weight on the hook — many tripods have a hook on the center column. Hang your camera bag on it for extra stability in wind.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a mirrorless camera on this tripod?
Yes. The BLANC SQUARE tripod has a universal 1/4 inch screw that fits almost all mirrorless cameras from Sony, Fuji, Nikon Z, Canon R, and other brands.

Does the Bluetooth remote also work for camera release?
The included remote is primarily designed for smartphones. For DSLR release, you need a separate remote compatible with your camera brand.

Is the tripod suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. The aluminum frame is weather-resistant. On soft ground like grass, you can insert the spiked feet for extra stability.
